Now (Then)
This piece explores the idea that memories are subjective not only to the person who remembers them but to the time in which they are remembered. It is representative of how a memory can warp over time due to experiences that have followed and to some extent become coloured or exaggerated  by feelings of nostalgia or bitterness towards a past that does not exist. It illustrates the idea that after time, a memory becomes a copy of a copy, as though you are repeatedly remembering the remembrance of a memory rather than an actual event. It also hints at questioning the idea that we have an ‘enduring self’. Do we believe we were the same person we were a year ago simply because we own the ‘memory’ of being that person.
Produced by photocopying an original photograph and copying the previous copy with deliberate warping of the image until unrecognisable.
I am also exhibiting this piece as part of John’s ‘Moment’ exhibit in the link gallery.
